Controversial darts player Adam Smith-Neale is set to return to the professional circuit next month, following the completion of his suspension.
The Darts Regulation Authority (DRA) had originally suspended Smith-Neale in March 2024 after footage surfaced of him punching an opponent during an amateur event in his hometown of Nuneaton.
The suspension, effective immediately, was set for eight months, keeping Smith-Neale out of all DRA-sanctioned events until November 12, 2024. See the incident from March where Neale can be seen striking his opponent after his loss:
The Incident and the Ban
During the DRA hearing, Smith-Neale admitted responsibility for the altercation but claimed his actions were provoked, stating that he felt threatened by his opponent. Despite his explanation, the disciplinary committee did not fully accept his justification and upheld the suspension. The ban was applied retroactively, meaning Smith-Neale was sidelined for the entire eight-month period.
The situation sparked debate within the darts community, with reactions ranging from sympathy for Smith-Neale to strong criticism. A video of the altercation, which quickly circulated online, showed the heated exchange before Smith-Neale threw the punch. Many within the community expressed disappointment, highlighting the need for professional conduct in the sport, especially given Smith-Neale’s visibility as a PDC Tour Card holder.
A Look at Smith-Neale's Career and Setbacks
Smith-Neale’s career has been one marked by highs and lows. Born in Coventry and currently based in Nuneaton, England, the 30-year-old, nicknamed "Big Dog," has been a professional darts player since 2010.
He has played across several darts organisations, including the PDC, BDO, and WDF, before regaining his PDC Tour Card in 2023. Despite his potential, controversies have often overshadowed his talent.
Early in his career, Smith-Neale showed promise on the PDC Youth Tour, finishing 9th in the rankings in 2011 and later winning Event 7 on the Youth Tour in 2012. However, he struggled on the main PDC Pro Tour, resulting in the loss of his Tour Card in 2012. He bounced between the Challenge Tour and Development Tour for several years before eventually switching focus to BDO events in 2018.

Smith-Neale’s breakthrough came when he won the BDO World Masters in 2018, defeating then-Number 1 Glen Durrant in a thrilling final. This victory qualified him for the 2019 BDO World Championship and the Grand Slam of Darts.
However, his victory was followed by yet another setback when he broke his leg while drunk during a tournament trip to Italy. Despite playing his match on crutches, he was beaten first round by New Zealand’s Mark McGrath.
A Fresh Opportunity Ahead But Will Fans Forgive Him?
With his suspension ending on November 12, 2024, Smith-Neale is preparing for a crucial return. The timing is pivotal, as he will be eligible to compete in the PDC World Darts Championship qualifying tournament on November 25. The PDC, in conjunction with the DRA, decided not to strip Smith-Neale of his Tour Card, meaning he is still eligible to compete professionally once his suspension is lifted. Some fans did not agree with this decision.
Should Smith-Neale be allowed to keep his Tour Card?
Yes
No
Smith-Neale’s Tour Card, which he regained in 2023 after defeating Nick Kenny on the final day of Q School remains intact. This gives him a valuable opportunity to redeem himself and potentially secure a spot in one of darts most prestigious events. If he can make the most of this qualifying chance, it could mark the beginning of a comeback and a chance to repair his public image.
Lingering Controversy and Social Media Backlash
Despite his return to the PDC circuit, Smith-Neale’s reputation remains under scrutiny. The Nuneaton incident is just the latest in a series of controversies. Social media platforms, particularly Facebook, have seen numerous complaints from fans accusing him of unprofessional conduct, including failing to deliver merchandise and unfulfilled promises. Though these allegations remain unproven, they have contributed to a cloud of negativity that has surrounded his career.
Smith-Neale’s choice of darts, 22g Red Dragon, and his signature walk-on song, “Big Dog” by Akon, have become familiar sights and sounds for darts fans. However, his nickname has taken on a new layer of irony as his off-oche behaviour often overshadows his performances on the stage.
Can Smith-Neale Overcome His Past?

As Smith-Neale prepares to return, the question remains whether he can turn things around. The PDC World Darts Championship qualifying tournament could be a pivotal moment, offering him the chance to prove that he’s focused on his game and committed to a professional future in the sport.
However, his track record, including incidents like the one in Italy and his more recent suspension, leaves fans wondering whether he’s capable of maintaining the discipline required at this level.
Fans and fellow players are divided—some believe in second chances and hope he can focus on his game, while others remain sceptical, viewing his behaviour as a pattern unlikely to change.
If Smith-Neale does qualify and perform well in the World Darts Championship, it could signal a new chapter. However, if controversy follows, it may cement his image as a player who struggles to keep his composure when it counts most.
For now, Smith-Neale’s future in darts hangs in the balance. All eyes will be on his performance in November as he attempts to make his mark on the professional circuit once again.
I don’t personally believe he has what it takes to qualify for the World Championships if he decides to make one last bid for glory. The rest of the field is too active and motivated, driven by the desire for more prize money to secure their tour cards.
